Tree of Life
Chinoiseries Vol. I

Ph: Damian Russell.
At the end of the 17th century Europe was swept by Sinomania – a craze for all things Chinese. Within one century, almost all of the great houses of Europe had at least one room decorated with a Chinese Wallpaper.
They were unlike the wallpapers available in England at that time, with their exotic subject matter, scenes of Chinese life and landscapes and flowering trees populated with birds and butterflies. The same goes for their rich hand-painted colors and fine detail. Above all, there was a playfulness and informality in the style that made them popular decorations especially for bedrooms and private apartments.
The appreciation for this type of decoration, popularised under the name Chinoiseries, has never waned. To mark the launch of two new colorways for our Scenic Decor Eastern Eden SC121, we curated a thematic portfolio bringing together our most beautiful Chinoiserie pieces inspired by the iconography of the Tree of Life.

Eastern Eden SC121, one of our favorite Chinoiserie designs, is now available in two new colorways: cs46 Alabaster and cs47 Bisque. These two soft, warm shades complete the range alongside the six other pastel colors in the collection.
The Decor comes with two different matching Wainscoting panels – PW1 & PW2 – available in 300 cm (118 1/8″) length and in 8 standard colors.

But there’s more: the Decor is now available in the Standard+ Color+ option, allowing to change the background color with a vast choice from our color palette.

In our latest portfolio dedicated to the Tree of Life designs in our collection, we present 8 more Decors and 2 Ceilings.
As with the rest of the Iksel collection, our inspirations span different spaces and times. For example, Xanadu Landscape SC117 is inspired by Queen Victoria‘s famous bedroom in the Brighton Pavilion.

Canton Reverie SC109 is a whimsical landscape of village life developed from an early 19th Century East India Company Wallpaper. The original panels, loaned by antique dealers, were incomplete.
Dimonah expanded the scene into a full Scenic Decor, connecting the first and last panels in its present form. This Decor is assorted with Canton Reverie Ceiling CE109, available in Custom only.

Dutch Tree of Life SC147 derives from a 17th Century Dutch screen, originally painted on leather. Interestingly, these were the first ‘Trees of Life’ which were to become all the rage on later Chinese wallpapers made for the European market.
In the modern day, the Tree of Life continues to emerge as a motif favored by artists, interior and fashion designers.
